Inlets

Inlets

Inlets began with two Japanese boro noragi vest fragments from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. I was drawn to the icy faded blues and the incredible texture. The plaid and striped patterns show through the layers, and it feels like everything the fabric went through is still right there on the surface. I deconstructed the vests and combined them with other fragments, moving the pieces around until the composition felt balanced. I spent over 240 hours hand sewing the fragments together.Inlets measures 36.5" wide x 45.5" high x 2" deep and was made in 2025.Stretched on premium Museo ALU-frame stretcher bars for a clean, simple presentation.Shipping within the continental United States is included. Mantle

Mantle

I made Mantle with two sides that feel different but belong together. The more textured side is made mostly from a deconstructed pair of Japanese monpe pants from the mid to late 1800s. I was drawn to the icy blue mixed with a soft yellowed patina, and the worn areas where the darker indigo shows through. I kept the patchwork and repairs visible and reinforced everything so it can continue to be worn. The other side is primarily from a Japanese noragi vest fragment, patched with other pieces. The blues there are softer and more mellow. It has a more understated, rugged strength.Mantle measures 9.5" x 54.5" and is about 1/4" thick and was made in 2025. Shipping within the continental United States is included. On and On

On and On

Stories in Blue & White 01Created in my Brooklyn studio, this sculpture is part of the 'Stories' series, launched in 2024. Made from 120 antique Japanese book fragments, each piece has been carefully curated for its unique distress, fading, and markings.Inspired by the aesthetics and craftsmanship of 19th-century Japanese culture, this work is an homage to the beauty of imperfection, the passage of time, and the signs that an object has been used and enjoyed in everyday life. Measuring 50 inches round and mounted on a custom maple wood board with a french cleat, the sculpture invites you to explore the layers of meaning within, including the stories of the books, their past owners, and your own connections. 'Stories in Blue & White 01' is a celebration of the narratives that shape us and a reminder of how they intertwine.Important Shipping Info: Estimated costs for a crate and freight shipping are added in checkout. If you would like an updated estimate that may be less based on your location, please contact me via jennifer@peaceandthread.com. Free pickup is available in Brooklyn, NY.

Beneath

Beneath

iBeneath came together from many Japanese boro fragments, including a long noragi jacket from the 1800s that I deconstructed. I peeled back layers on several of the pieces to see what was underneath. I was especially excited when I found the fabric with the three faces. I had never come across a print like that before. It was a nice surprise.Beneath measures 43" wide x 44" high x 2" deep and was made in 2024.Stretched on premium Museo ALU-frame stretcher bars for a clean, simple presentation.Shipping within the continental United States is included. Steps

Steps

I made Steps from antique Japanese books I’ve been collecting over time. I’ve always loved the covers, especially the different shades of faded blue and teal. The writing and small marks on them draw me in, and I’m always especially happy when I find one with a drawing. In this piece, there’s a Japanese face peeking out from the lower left side. When I was young, I used to draw and write in my own books. Working with these covers, I think about the people who held them before me. I imagine them adding their own marks, just like I did.The pages are made from washi paper. It’s very strong, almost like fabric, which helps in layering and building them into this form.Steps measures 26.5" x 44" and was made in 2024.Shipping within the continental United States is included. If you’re outside the U.S., email me at jennifer@peaceandthread.com for shipping details.
